Proposal for 2015 Summer Bridge Course for ESL Students: Pathway to College


Course Description: This five-week course is designed to prepare adult school students for successful study in English as a Second Language at Ohlone College. It will include practice in all language skills, academic technology, and study skills.
Plan for recruitment:
1. Promote the class at Fremont and New Haven Adult Schools during spring semester 2015. A handout will be available to students by the week of March 23.
2. Announce the class at Ohlone Placement Tests.
Counselor Information: This is a non-credit class with no course prerequisites, but it is intended for students who place into ESL 181 or 182 on the ESL Placement Test. It also requires basic typing skills and access to a computer with Internet.
3, Instructors (adult school and Ohlone) sign up for professional development (two instructors per course observe and take part in each Bridge Course workshop - goal is for instructors to observe and use instructional technology.)

Prerequisites: Students at Intermediate through Advanced ESL levels in Adult School must complete an application to enroll in the class, have basic typing skills, and have access to a computer with internet service. Students will be required to bring their own headsets to class.
No visitors/tourists will be allowed in this class.


Enrollment: Adult school instructors, together with the Ohlone Bridge Course instructor, will look at the applications to discuss enrollment specifics and evaluate students’ readiness for the course. No students will be enrolled after the first week of class. The cap for the class will be set at 30 students. Students will be enrolled at FACE.


Dates: June 23 - July 23 (5 weeks)
Meeting times: Tuesday and Thursday 1:00-3:30 p.m.
Total class hours: 25 class hours + 5 additional hours for coordination/staff meetings + 10 hours for twice weekly conversation corners


Staffing:
Lead instructor (ESL faculty from Ohlone)
Instructor’s Assistant ( Experienced ESL tutor from Ohlone)
Ohlone College counselor and financial aid staff (a single one-hour visit from each)


Location: FACE, room 1


Materials Fee: $30 ( In the end, we actually did not charge anything because we launched it so fast.)


Space/facility/technology needs: classroom equipped for 30 students; projector, screen, printer, whiteboard, laptops for 30 students, strong wireless network for Internet access

Note: Class will be open for SACC members observation which will be paid time for professional development.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
  1. Express their ideas in speech and writing at a level necessary for participation in Ohlone College ESL courses (using comprehensible sentences and/or paragraphs on topics studied).
  2. Follow spoken and/or written directions to complete assignments in a timely fashion according to standards expected by a college instructor.
  3. Perform computer-related tasks expected by college instructors (including typing, document creation and manipulation, online searches, communication, and other tasks)
  4. Demonstrate confidence in their ability to pursue college coursework

Note: We plan to do long-term follow up of students (tracking enrollment, success, and persistence in college coursework for the following academic year). Funding for follow-up activities is to be included in the SACC budget planning.
